Like certified deputies, reserves are professionally trained and sworn law enforcement personnel. Reserves, however, are volunteers that are not necessarily certified by the Alabama Peace Officers Training Commission. Reserves are assigned to a certified deputy; work at the direction / authority of the certified deputy, and will perform tasks alongside that deputy for the duration of that shift such as; patrol, traffic control, answering calls, security at events are just a few examples. To become a reserve deputy you must be a US citizen, High School diploma or GED, 20 years old with no prior criminal record, good driving record and complete basic introduction courses such as firearms safety, firearms qualifications (must score at least a 70%), less lethal course and practical (OC and Taser), etc.
